Confessions of a Headmaster

October 23, 2007

By now, any Potterphile worth his or her weight in knuts has heard Jo Rowling’s revelation that Albus Dumbledore, beloved headmaster of Hogwarts, is gay.  She made the announcement at an author event in NY on Friday.  Apparently, his friendship with Gellert Grindelwald was more of an infatuation on his part, which eventually turned against him when Grindelwald turned to the dark side of the force…er um…magic. Sorry, wrong series there.

It’s interesting that she came out with this now. One, she has nothing to lose – there are no more books planned in the series. Two, I’d like to imagine it’s her polite British way of flipping the bird to the factions of the “religiously-motivated” who have denounced the series for its use of magic (“Ha, and if you think the magic is bad, wait till you hear about the Headmaster!”) She says it’s never come up because she’s never been asked directly about it, but you have to wonder whether this would have changed the way people perceived the books if it came out sooner. It does add another wrinkle to “Deathly Hallows” knowing it. It doesn’t change the plot, but it does change the way you look at what happened. It sure appears in afterthought that this was deliberate on her part, and not just a flip answer to someone asking a question. Either way, it’s her character, she can do what she wants with him. Just knowing this, though, I would have expected him to dress better…
