“If I Did It”…would people buy it?

August 21, 2007

Or would people even be able to find it?  Publishers Weekly is reporting that Barnes & Noble has declined to stock “If I Did It”, the whatever it is you want to call it coming from O.J. Simpson.  They will list it at but not carry it in any of the bricks and mortar stores.  They explain that they do not believe there will be big enough interest from customers to carry it on the stores. They’re probably right, and trying to read any sort of moral stand into a decision like this might be the wrong way to go, but it’s hard to think that thinking didn’t go into the final outcome.

Borders is taking a stranger position, stocking it but deciding not to promote it. Their logic is that they want to offer choice to customers, and customers should be the ones to decide if they want the book, not the account. True, but there are plenty of books that this or any account would pass on, and most would be hard pressed to find any redeeming value to a book like this one. Why make this piece of junk a book to take a stand on?

Amazon is listing the book, but they pretty much list everything, so it’s not as if there is any controversy here.

What I find interesting about this is that the royalties for the sales of this book will now go to the Goldman family and Estate of Nicole Brown Simpson (aka – the kids), not to OJ himself. I have no plans to purchase the book either way and I find the Goldmans two-faced in their position of first not wanting the book published and then publishing it themselves…but at least the money is going to the right place. This whole thing is a big struggle for me since I am a firm proponent of the 1st Amendment – this freaking book is SO tacky – it just feels like it has crossed the line of shameless. Jen is right about where the money will end up, but I secretly hope no one buys it.

It would appear that PW are handling the promotion for this title.
