Big Birthday – Reijavick or Vegas or ???

August 10, 2007

Without giving away too many details, I’m having a siginifant birthday this year.  I’ve already secured a babysitter for a weekend to watch the kids, now I just need to think about where DH and I want to go.  I’ve always said that I wanted to go to Reijavick Iceland for a long weekend.  Why, I’m not sure. But I’ve seen travel guides to the area, and it looks like an amazing place.  Hubby is now thinking Vegas, which is NOT a hubby kind of place.  But he likes the idea of the Bellagio and the dancing fountains and seeing “O”. My idea of Vegas is more hitting the Star Trek Experience and indulging my inner Fanilow.  People, they’re in the same hotel for a reason.

I can compromise, and if he’s willing to get on a plane, I’m in. We have a small window with which to come up with something, so if anyone has any suggestions for anything that’s a decent trip from the East Coast of the US for a weekend, share away!

Iceland? I’m struggling on that one. But yes I think a trip is in order. I’ll try and think of a good and unique place you guys can go.

I’ve always had a secret desire to visit Rekjavik too. I say do it.

I’m thinking Iceland– just so you can say that you’ve done it. Vegas you can do anytime. Vegas you probably have to do at least once/year for work anyway.

But, in the interests of full discosure, I think Vegas is the 5th layer of hell.

What about Montreal? There is a casino (one of the few I have ever entered, and it seemed nice enough) for your dear husband, it is somewhat exotic because of the language, great music and restaurants (I have several recommendations from when my brother was stationed there) , and it is both inexpensive and easy to walk around so you would not need a car. However, if you have always yearned for Iceland you should follow through – when will you have another opportunity? But talk to your fifth floor colleagues to make sure you wouldn’t be disappointed once you got there.

I have to agree with Constance on this one. After all, Montreal is Shatner’s birth place.

Re: Montreal – we’ve been there. We did the Jazz Festival one summer. Did I mention my birthday is in December? It’s cold in Montreal and I’m wimpy. If my birthday was summer, I would definitely go there.

And DH is not drawn in by the casinos. He doesn’t gamble. Something about the dancing waters at the Bellagio and seeing “O” tickled his fancy. I can’t explain it.

Wouldn’t Iceland be chilly in December? What about Cuba? You might have to sneak in via Canada or Jamaica but it would be very cutting edge of you.
